You Gotta Be Willing To Break Away To Get Ahead

In a road bicycle race, a peloton is the main group or pack of riders riding close together. The cyclists within this group benefit significantly from this formation due to the aerodynamics it creates. As much as they benefit from this situation, at some point, they will have to leave the welcomed ease they feel from riding within the pack. The rider will have to break away from the group if they want any shot at winning the race. I’ve found life will often pose that very same scenario. How many times have you seen yourself operating with relative ease within your comfort zone? It happens in our careers, in relationships, or it could be anywhere familiarity resides. I confronted the need to leave my neighborhood’s peloton when I decided to pursue a career in music.

I realized if I wanted to experience the kind of life many within that group thought was a fool’s dream, I would have to break away from the pack to get ahead. With that being said, you should know the decision to move away from people, places, and familiar things to you isn’t an easy proposition. The truth is, it will make you feel super uncomfortable or perhaps even hurt you. Just ask the cyclists who must dig deeper while pushing their bodies even harder in their attempt to break away to get ahead. Not long ago, I made that decision again when I moved out of state to a town where familiar people, places, and things were no longer accessible to me. As hard as my move was on me (trust me, it was very hard for me), I knew I had to break away if I wanted to get ahead. I truly believe because I broke away, my business is now thriving. I honestly don’t think if I stayed in my familiar comfort zone, I would be experiencing this level of happiness or success. In addition to that, it stretched me in the best possible way. I now know what I’m truly capable of enduring. My advice to people who say they want to get ahead in this life (whatever that means to you) is that you must be willing to break away from that peloton in your life. You will need to break away to get ahead!
